Eric’s first taste of international recognition came when he was asked to replace Anthony “Top” Topham as the lead guitarist for The Yardbirds. The band developed a loyal following and released several singles and a live debut album, Five Live Yardbirds during Eric’s tenure. While recording of the band’s first single “For Your Love”, Eric realized his days with the band were numbered as they were headed towards making more commercial music.

During Eric’s tenure, The Yardbirds’ lineup was:

Eric Clapton - guitar
Chris Dreja - guitar
Keith Relf - vocals, harmonica
Paul Samwell-Smith - bass
Jim McCarty - drums

After Eric left the band, he would be replaced by Jeff Beck. After Jeff left, his replacement was Jimmy Page.
